Electrotherapy Human Factors Evaluation

The Challenge:

  • Provide speech therapists with a comfortable, easy-to-use probe for post-stroke vocal (intra-oral) electrotherapy
  • Establish functional, usability, and form factor requirements for a new universal probe
  • Develop design concepts and models for a new universal probe product

The Approach:

  • Observe electrotherapy in a stroke rehabilitation hospital
  • Interview experienced speech therapists regarding electrotherapy probe requirements
  • Evaluate existing electrotherapy products
  • Consult with engineers and designers from The Chattanooga Group
  • Identify Human Factors and Industrial Design requirements for the universal probe
  • Develop Human Factors and Industrial Design concepts for the new probe
  • Build foam design prototypes of the most promising concepts
  • Evaluate concepts and Human Factors requirements with engineers and designers

The Result: Provided workable concepts for a new universal electrotherapy probe and a complete description of the human factors and industrial design requirements for such a product.
